Growser — privacy policy

What leaves your device, where exactly it goes, and what is kept. By name.

Growser is a Chromium browser. Chromium reaches out to Google's services by default; in this build those calls are either removed or routed through our proxy, so that your device's address does not reach a third party. Below is everything the browser sends out and everything that is kept at our end. The list is complete: if a feature is not here, it sends nothing.

In short

What leaves the device

WhenWhereWhat exactly
The browser crashed and you allowed sending growser-crashes.humans.top — our server A minidump: a snapshot of the crashed process's memory — the call stack, the registers and fragments of what was in memory at that moment. In some cases the address of an open page, or part of its content, can end up in it. Plus the browser and operating system versions.
You pressed "Translate page" backend.growser.org, and from there Yandex Translate The text of the page being translated. Only on your action: without the press, nothing is sent.
Opening sites, with protection from dangerous sites on backend.growser.org, and from there Google Safe Browsing Prefixes of address hashes, not the addresses themselves. That is how the protocol works: a prefix cannot be turned back into the page you opened.
Drawing site icons in history, bookmarks and on the new tab page backend.growser.org, and from there gstatic.com The addresses of the sites whose icons are needed. That reveals which sites you have saved — which is why the request goes through the proxy, and your device's address never reaches Google.
Updating filter lists and internal components backend.growser.org, and from there Google's servers; filter lists come from their publishers' own servers The versions of the components installed and the requests to download new ones. No page addresses and no content.
Filling in forms (the structure of the fields) backend.growser.org, and from there gstatic.com A description of the form's structure. The values you typed are not sent.
Checking for browser updates Windows — the Microsoft Store; macOS — growser.org The current browser version. On Windows the Store delivers updates; the build itself has no self-update mechanism.
Search and address-bar suggestions The search engine you chose (DuckDuckGo by default) What you typed. This is an ordinary search request, and the search engine receives it, not us.
Why backend.growser.org appears in the table so often. It is our proxy, and it stands between you and the outside services for one purpose — to keep you out of their view. In every case listed, Google and Yandex see a request from our address rather than yours, and get nothing that could tie the request to a particular person. The proxy itself keeps no request logs and passes that information to nobody: not to advertising networks, not to analytics services, not to partners — the project has none of the three.

What the proxy sees, and what we keep

The proxy runs on Cloudflare Workers. Cloudflare acts as a transit operator there and, like any such operator, sees the connection's IP address; that is covered by Cloudflare's policy. Further along the chain your address no longer travels.

In that proxy we record only the request method, the path, the response code and the number of fragments translated. No IP addresses, no page addresses and no request content go into the record, and there is no permanent storage of these records: they are visible in the live stream while debugging and are exported nowhere.

Crash reports are the only thing we keep. They sit on our GlitchTip server and are deleted after 90 days.

Crash reports: your choice

On the first screen after installation the browser asks whether to send crash reports. The box is ticked, and it is visible before you press anything else; clearing it takes one movement. You can change your mind at any time: Settings → Privacy and security → Data collection → Automatically send diagnostic data.

Until you answer, nothing is sent. In a managed environment an administrator can forbid sending by policy, and that overrides your choice in both directions.

This applies to Windows (builds 152.26.824.1 and newer) and to macOS (152.26.825.0 and newer). In earlier builds reports were sent by default, without the question.

On Android the question is on the last welcome screen. The box is ticked there too, and your answer is recorded when you press "Start browsing". To change it: Settings → Brave Shields & privacy → Automatically send diagnostic reports.

On iPhone and iPad

Growser for iOS is the same browser built for Apple's platform, with one difference that Apple requires of every browser there: pages are displayed by Apple's WebKit. What leaves the device on iOS:

WhenWhereWhat exactly
The app crashed and you allowed sending growser-crashes.humans.top — our server A minidump, as on the desktop, plus the app and iOS versions. The app asks on first launch; the switch is in the privacy settings, "Send crash reports".
Translating a page Nowhere: Apple translates on the device. backend.growser.org, and from there translate.brave.com, only delivers the translation script The page's text does not leave the device.
Opening sites, with "Block dangerous sites" on Apple — WebKit's fraudulent website warning, the same one Safari uses The check is Apple's and follows Apple's rules; the browser adds nothing of its own.
Updating filter lists Their publishers' own servers (such as easylist.to and GitHub) Requests for the lists. No page addresses and no content.
Updating internal components and the browser's configuration backend.growser.org, and from there Google's servers for components The versions installed and requests for new ones. No page addresses and no content.
Search and address-bar suggestions The search engine you chose (DuckDuckGo by default) What you typed. The search engine receives it, not us.
Checking for updates The App Store Handled by Apple, as for any app.

On Android

Growser for Android is the same Chromium browser as on the desktop, and it sends almost the same things. Two differences: Android performs some features through Google Play services — only when you use them, or a site you allowed does — and there is no page translation on Android. What leaves the device on Android:

WhenWhereWhat exactly
The browser crashed and you allowed sending growser-crashes.humans.top — our server A minidump, as on the desktop, plus the browser and Android versions.
Opening sites, with protection from dangerous sites on backend.growser.org, and from there Google Safe Browsing Hash prefixes of addresses, as on the desktop: the lists of dangerous sites are kept on the device, and a follow-up goes out only when a prefix matches. The addresses themselves are not sent. On by default; to turn it off: Settings → Brave Shields & privacy → Safe Browsing.
Updating internal components and the browser's configuration backend.growser.org, and from there Google's servers for components The versions installed and requests for new ones. No page addresses and no content.
Updating filter lists Their publishers' own servers (GitHub, easylist.to, fanboy.co.nz, gitlab.io) Requests for the lists. No page addresses and no content.
Search engine icons, when you open the address bar or the search settings backend.growser.org, and from there gstatic.com The addresses of the search engines whose icons are shown. Not your history, and not the pages you open.
Search and address-bar suggestions The search engine you chose (DuckDuckGo by default) What you typed. Suggestions as you type are off by default on Android.
A site sends you notifications, and you allowed it to Google Firebase Cloud Messaging, through Google Play services That site's subscription to your device and the messages it sends. The site encrypts its messages for your browser: Google delivers them but cannot read them. Until you allow notifications, nothing is sent.
A site asked for your location, and you allowed it Android's location service (Google Play services) Android determines the location under Google's rules and your phone's settings; the site you allowed receives it.
Signing in with a passkey, filling a code from an SMS, casting to a screen, augmented reality Google Play services on your device Only when you use them, or a site does on your action. Android performs these features itself, under Google's rules.
Voice input Android's system speech recognizer (usually Google's) Microphone audio — only after you tap the microphone.
A site plays protected video (as streaming services do) Google — the Widevine service A certificate request for the video-protection module on your device. Only after a site starts such a video.
Checking for updates The beta from growser.org: backend.growser.org. From Google Play: Google Play The beta sends the app's name and its version - nothing about the phone or you - at most every five hours while the browser is open, and our server answers with the newest version on growser.org. A newer one shows "Update Growser" in the menu, and the APK downloads only when you tap it. A copy installed from Google Play is updated by Google Play, as any app is.

There is no page translation on Android: the browser has no translator on the phone itself, and we do not want to send the text of pages to outside servers. The browser's data is not included in Android's backups to Google's cloud.

What we are not responsible for

Children

Growser is not directed at children specifically and does not collect information about anyone's age.

Changes

This page changes along with the browser. If something that sends data disappears from it or appears in it, the text above changes too and the date at the bottom is updated. Substantial changes are called out separately in the release notes.

Questions

Write to [email protected]. If you want to know what we hold about you, the answer is almost certainly "nothing, except possibly a crash report" — and we will delete such a report at your request, if we can find it by its time and version.

Why in this much detail. None of it has to be taken on trust: the browser is built from open sources, and the proxy is one small file sitting beside them. The list above was compiled from the code, not from memory.

Android

Проверка обновлений Бета с growser.org — backend.growser.org.
